The All Party Writers Group (APWG) supports writers’ organisations calls for greater transparency and author control and remuneration.
In December, the Government launched a consultation on AI and copyright to “seek views on how the Government can ensure the UK’s legal framework for AI and copyright supports the UK creative industries and AI sector together”.
The Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) submission to the consultation argued for greater transparency measures as an essential first step, the ditching of the opt-out model proposed by the Government, and the creation of a Copyright Hub to facilitate a licensing market.
The Society of Authors submission rejected the idea of a broad copyright exemption and argued that the existing copyright regime works well, and also criticised the opt-out approach as impractical.
The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain’s briefing for members described the opt-out model as placing an unfair administrative burden on creators, urged for a licence to be required for all uses of protected works and also called for greater transparency to allow creators to enforce their rights.
