Digital Economy Act 2017 extends Public Lending Right (PLR) to ebooks

The All Party Writers Group has long lobbied for the extension of PLR to the remote lending of ebooks and audiobooks and this has now been achieved with the passage of the Digital Economy Act 2017. The Digital Economy Act 2010 which extended PLR to audiobooks and on-site loans of ebooks and the 2017 has now extended it to remote loans, so that loans of ebooks are properly represented with PLR.

With an increase in the number of loans of ebooks to around 4m the Digital Economy Act 2017 will ensure that legislation better reflects the way society reads books. It will help ensure authors receive their PLR payments for books and audiobooks, e-books and e-audiobooks whether loaned in the library or remotely.
